The Five Elements - Mahabhutas
Energy & Life. Conjoined & Individual.
Understanding
the all-encompassing and all-defining forms of energy is one of the
fundamental concepts of Ayurveda life. In Ayurveda it is
decided which among the five elements - the Mahabhutas
form the micro- and macrocosm. All characteristics of man, the world
and the universe are built with these five energies as its foundation
-- this means that everything is connected.

This
multi-faceted connection is the premise behind Ayurvedic treatments
and way of life. The five Mahabhutas exhibit themselves in
different ways and frame the five forms of energy:
- Akasha - Ether & Space: Removes obstacles and creates a sense of being bodily light and sleek.
- Vayu – Air: Represents the element's movement by making the body light and refined.
- Agni – Fire: This element is the basis of the digestive system and regulates body temperature.
- Jala – Water: Works by building, binding and thickening body tissue and is the base of all bodily fluids.
- Prithivi – Earth: This element strengthens, and hardens one's body and calls upon the sense of smell.
The knowledge of how the five Mahabhutas work is applied to all
Ayurveda Treatments and Therapies. Your treatment will be individually designed taking your
body type and the five elements into consideration.
